As a filmmaker and director of photography I bring a gritty realism to my work yet infuse it with a sense of humor and pathos. I am endlessly inspired by people, and have worked intimately with celebrities like Elaine Stritch to tuberculosis victims in the slums of Delhi.
As a cinematographer my work has shown at international film festivals including Sundance, Toronto, and Tribeca. In the advertising world my directing has been nominated for a Cannes Lion and in journalism I have been awarded a first place POY for multimedia project of the year.
I directed the feature documentaries DRIVERS WANTED (PBS) and FLYING ON ONE ENGINE (SXSW). I have also collaborated with the NY Time’s Op-Docs on multiple shorts including HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR BAND and SUBWAY BALLET.
I have lectured on film at Duke, NYU, Vanderbilt, and many others universities. I am an alumnus of Boston University College of Communication Film department, an alumnus of the CPB/PBS Producers Academy at WGBH, and two time recipient of the NEA funded Southern Circuits Arts Tour. I used to play bass in the hardcore band Trophy Scars. Currently I live in New York City and am completing my all Yiddish directorial fiction debut.
Yes my middle name is just the letter Z. IMDB has it wrong, my name should be spelled Joshua Z Weinstein (no period after Z). I am happy to explain in person.
